Hyacinth Yorke
“Hy Intensity Tennis”
Hyacinth Yorke, a sprinter, picked up a tennis racket at age 14. After making Erasmus Hall’s basketball team, her mother stated that “tennis would be better.” So, in the spring of freshman year, Hy made the tennis team.
At Erasmus Hall which is Barbara Streisand’s alma mater, Hy, under the tutelage of Marlane Sidorsky, played at the #3 spot in singles. For the rest of her high school career, she played at the #1 spot, making the New York City Regional.
At Temple University, on a tennis scholarship, Hy played #1-#3 in singles and doubles, winning the P.A.I.A.W. regional in 1981 which led to a semi-finalist appearance at the A.I.A.W National. Hy won the P.A.I.A.W. regional again in 1982 and made the second round at the N.C.A.A. division l National, eventually earning a 67-11 college record. In 1982, Hy was an alternate for the US Open field based on her college play.
After college Hy played and won many tennis tournaments and started her teaching career as Ann Koger’s assistant at Haverford College.
Always a proponent of cross-training to stay fit on court, Hy started getting serious about her tournament play in 1994 with a semi-final appearance in the USTA Nationals and a year end ranking of #3 in the USA.
After two winters in Barbados as tennis director for Marriott, Hy started her USTA National run. 6-time USTA Grass National Singles Champion, 3 time USTA Grass National Doubles Champion.
Hy represented the USA on three Cup teams. Young Cup played in Velden, Austria in 2001. Suzanne Lenglen Cup played in Naples, Florida in 2002; finalist, and Suzanne Lenglen Cup played in Antalya, Turkey in 2003. Hy captained this team and team USA won the Cup.
Former World and US #1 ranked player.
