Pickleball: The Fast-Growing Sport Taking the U.S. by Storm

Pickleball is a fun and fast-paced sport that is growing in popularity all over the world, especially here in Philadelphia. The game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong and is played with a perforated plastic ball, a paddle, and a net. It’s a great game for players of all skill levels, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

The History of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington. The game was created by Joel Pritchard, a former Congressman, and his friends. They were looking for a new sport to play and wanted something that was easy to learn and fun for everyone. They named the sport Pickleball after Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who used to chase after the ball during games.

How to Play Pickleball

Everyone loves how pickleball is easy to learn but continues to provide a challenge every match. The objective of Pickleball is to hit the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court, while trying to prevent your opponent from returning the ball. The game can be played as singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2). Points are scored when the opponent is unable to return the ball, or if they hit the ball out of bounds. The first player or team to reach 11 points wins the game, as long as they have a 2-point lead.

Similar to tennis, the ball is served diagonally from the right side of the court to the left side of the opponent’s court. After each point, the ball is served from the opposite side of the court. The serve must be made underhand and the ball must clear the net and bounce in the opponent’s court.

Equipment Needed for Pickleball

To play Pickleball, you will only need a few basic pieces of equipment, and that’s it! These include:

  • Pickleball paddle
  • Pickleball
  • And of course, nets which are provided for you

Paddles come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, so it’s easy to find the right fit for you. Pickleballs are usually made of plastic and are perforated to create a truer movement of the ball. The net should be set up at a height of 34 inches in the center and 36 inches at the posts.

Benefits of Playing Pickleball

Pickleball is a great form of exercise and is a fun way to improve your fitness. It’s also a great way to socialize and make new friends. The game is easy to learn and can be played by people of all ages, making it a great activity for families.

Pickleball is also a low-impact sport, which means that it’s easy on the joints and is a great option for people who want to exercise without putting too much stress on their bodies.
