The New At-Home Fitness – Working out during the stay-at-home order
With the rise of Philadelphians switching from the office to working at home, it’s never been easier to “be laidback” all day when you don’t need to be somewhere. So, it’s important to not let yourself get too relaxed. Staying active and making a fitness routine a priority is especially important right now and will help make your time at home full of productivity, health and happiness.
How to begin working out at home
The gym is closed for the time being, but that doesn’t mean you should skip your workouts. Fitness starts in the mind as daily choices to be disciplined and improve. Try making it your goal to return even stronger when the gym reopens. A home exercise routine also doesn’t need expensive gym equipment or a specially designed room in your house either. Your body is all the equipment you need for workouts that are simple and effective.
Workout on a schedule
Even though you are not prepping your hair and spending time in traffic, days working at home can fill up quickly with tasks like taking care of kids or dealing with unexpected tech issues with your home office. Working out each day at a set time is one of the most effective ways to stay on track with your fitness while working at home.
Tips on getting your workout in everyday:
- Be productive right when you wake up. Don’t let the lure of being home and your comfy couch sap away precious morning hours. Use time normally set aside for your commute or prepping for work as time to get in a workout and add a boost to your metabolism for the rest of the day.
- If you’re not a morning exercise person then block off your lunch break each day for a workout break instead. Working from home allows plenty of other times to eat.
- Set a reminder on your calendar and make health and fitness a top priority.
Find free online workouts for your fitness level
Once you have committed to a set time each day to exercise, find a combination of free online workouts that are right for you. These should be easy to follow and effective.
You can find some of your favorite AFC Fitness class instructors streaming workouts from their homes on AFC’s Facebook page. But these workouts will be limited due to instructors’ responsibilities like kids and family coming first during the stay-at-home order.
There are many other free online workout options for members who want to continue their fitness during the shutdown. Despite the lack of social encouragement and energy of being in a live session with classmates, you’ll find a guided session on your phone, laptop or smart tv can help you get through these times.

So, push that recliner to the side, get on your workout clothes, and keep working out so you’re ready to get back in the gym!
